Closing Bell: BSE Sensex, Nifty 50 end day in red; Check top gainers, losers of stock market

The markets on Thursday closed in negative territory shedding yesterday's gains. Both the 30-share BSE Sensex and Nifty 50 were down by over 2 per cent from the previous close. The BSE Sensex ended the day at 31,122.89 or over 885 points lower while the broader market Nifty 50 ended at 9,142.75 or over 240 points lower than what it had achieved on Wednesday.
The Sensex today opened at 31,466.33 while the NSE Nifty at opened at 9,201.40.
Hero MotoCorp, Larsen & Tubro, Maruti Suzuki, Ultratech Cement and Sun Pharmaceuticals were the top gainers on the Sensex at the day's end while Tech Mahindra, Infosys, HDFC, Indusind Bank and Reliance Industries were the top losers. At the close, 23 out of the 30 stocks on Sensex were in the red.
Meanwhile, on the broader Nifty 50 index the top gainers at the time of closing were Bharti Infratel, Hero MotoCorp, Larsen & Tubro and Ultratech Cement. Top loser on Nifty-50 were Tech Mahindra, Infosys, Hindalco Industries, HDFC and Indusind Bank.
Most Nifty sectoral indices today traded in red including Nifty Auto which was down by over 0.7 per cent, Nifty bank by almost 3 per cent, Nifty Metal by 2.6 per cent and Nifty IT down by over 3.5 per cent. Nifty FMCG and Nifty Pharma ended the day in green, though only marginally.
Today, the rupee was trading weaker from Wednesday close at Rs 75.5100 per USD at around 3:50 pm. On Wednesday the rupee ended at 75.4500.

Meanwhile among the global peers, Asia`s stock markets fell and gold hit a one-week high on Thursday as worries about a second wave of coronavirus infections and a dour assessment of the way back from the head of the U.S. Federal Reserve dashed hopes for a quick recovery. MSCI`s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan fell 1 per cent, while Japan`s Nikkei fell about 0.7 percent. US stock futures fell 0.2 per cent, after the S&P 500 index`s worst two-day drop in nearly a month. Benchmark indexes in Australia, Hong Kong, Korea and China all fell about 1 per cent.
