Fitness With Zee Business: In this fast-moving life, if we Indians are neglecting something to the maximum, then that is our health. A good number of people in India (both in rural and urban parts) are suffering from obesity and abdominal fat.
Recognising the changes taking place in the BMI (Body Mass Index) of the people in India due to changing food and lifestyle choices, the Indian council of Medical Research (ICMR) and National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) in its latest report titled 'What India Eats' has made a big change in how things are viewed. In this regard, the normal weight of males, which was earlier recognised as 60 kg has been increased to 65 kg for men.
At the same time, for women the normal weight has been increased from 50 kg to 55 kg. Not just weight, the report has increased the normal height as well for both males and females. Now, the normal BMI for 65 kg male will be 5 feet 8 inch while for 55 kg female, ideal height will be 5 feet 3 inch.
Explaining the latest ICMR-NIN report on 'What India Eats' Zee Business' Mritunjay Jha said, "Earlier such ICMR and NIN report was published in the year 2010. In that report males up to 60 kg were considered normal if their height was 5 feet 5 inch, while female with 50 kg weight were considered normal if their height was 5 feet."

Decoding the meaning of this increase in mass and height of both males and females, Jha said, "This increase by 5 kgs means males up to 65 kg will not be considered overweight or obese. Similarly, if a female weighs 55 kg, she won't be considered overweight or obese."
