On May 23, 2021, a national consultation was arranged by the Ministry of Education with the Education Ministers and administrators of all the states and union territories. The consultation was chaired by the Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and was attended by Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank. In the meeting there were discussions on conducting the CBSE Class 12 Board Exam 2021. The states and the union territories were also asked to send their written feedback on the same by May 25, 2021, in the meeting. Though there was a broad consensus towards conducting the CBSE Class 12 Board Exam 2021, some of the states and union territories suggested 'non-examination route' and vaccination of the board exam candidates before conducting the exams.
Senior officials at the Ministry say that conducting shorter versions of the exams are also under consideration by the central government as per a report by The Hindu. Incidentally, the proposal for conducting exams for only 19 major subjects was also presented by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) at the high-level government meeting with the Union Education Minister and State Education Ministers on May 23, 2021.
It was proposed that the CBSE Class 12 Board Exam 2021 will be allowed to write their board exams in their own schools and unlike the usual three-hour long exam duration, exams of shorter duration of 90 minutes with MCQs and short answers will be used. Also, it was suggested that the CBSE Class 12 Board Exam 2021 will have to be conducted twice so that the students affected by COVID-19 must not miss their exams.
At present, a plea on the cancellation of the ICSE CBSE Class 12 Board Exam 2021 is also going on at the Supreme Court. Advocate Mamta Sharma filed a PIL in the Supreme Court seeking the cancellation of the CBSE Class 12 Board Exam 2021 due to COVID-19 situation in the country. The hearing began at the apex court last Friday and was adjourned till Monday. Yesterday, the bench adjourned the matter till Thursday noting that competent authorities are examining all aspects and are likely to take a decision which will be placed before the court. The apex court has adjourned the plea filed for the cancellation of the CISCE CBSE Class 12 Board Exam 2021 after being informed by the Attorney General that the government will be taking final decision in the next two days.
Incidentally, on April 14, 2021, the CBSE Class 10 Board Exam 2021 was cancelled and CBSE Class 12 Board Exam 2021 was postponed. It was notified that a decision on the CBSE Class 12 Board Exam 2021 will be taken after a thorough review of the COVID-19 situation in the country on June 1, 2021.
When the Union Education Minister had to be hospitalised earlier today, it seemed unlikely that any decision on the CBSE Class 12 Board Exam 2021 will be announced today. Now, with the Prime Minister chairing a meeting on the same issue this evening might lead to an announcement on the CBSE Class 12 Board Exam 2021 soon.
