NLC India launches first supercritical power plant, begins commercial operations

NLC India Limited (NLCIL) has announced the start of commercial operations for the first unit of its 3 x 660 MW Ghatampur Thermal Power Plant (GTPP) in Uttar Pradesh. The project, developed through Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power Limited (NUPPL)—a joint venture between NLCIL and Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (UPRVUNL)—marks a historic milestone for the company.

The first unit of the GTPP successfully completed trial operations on December 7, 2024, and commenced commercial operations at midnight on December 12, 2024. This achievement represents NLCIL's first foray into supercritical power generation technology, a major advancement in its energy portfolio.

First Fossil Fuel-based thermal power plant of FY 2024-25

The commissioning of the 660 MW unit is notable as it is the first fossil fuel-based thermal power plant inaugurated in India this financial year. The milestone underscores NLCIL's capability to execute large-scale projects that contribute to India's energy security and sustainable development objectives.

With this addition, NLCIL and its group companies have increased their total installed power generation capacity from 6,071 MW to 6,731 MW.

Meeting regional power demands with efficiency

The GTPP project is set to address the growing electricity needs of Uttar Pradesh and Assam. Equipped with supercritical technology, the plant ensures higher thermal efficiency, reduced fuel consumption, and lower emissions compared to conventional thermal plants. Advanced environmental management systems, including electrostatic precipitators and flue-gas desulfurisation units, highlight the project's commitment to sustainable practices.

Strengthening strategic partnerships

The GTPP exemplifies the strategic collaboration between NLCIL and UPRVUNL. Through their joint venture, Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power Limited (NUPPL), the organisations combine NLCIL's operational expertise with UPRVUNL's understanding of regional energy requirements.

Speaking on the achievement, Shri Prasanna Kumar Motupalli, CMD of NLCIL, stated:
