India’s life expectancy rose by a decade in the past 30 years, though there are still inequalities between different regions within the country. However, a new study published in the Lancet Journal reports that the life expectancy in India increased from 59.6 years to 70.8 years between 1990 and 2019. This is a result of the enormous progress achieved not just in the living standard of Indians but also in the field of medical treatment. The latter is being run by competent doctors who are devoting their lives to keeping others healthy for life. One such noted doctor is Dr. Shivanshu Misra, who is the first and only certified bariatric, diabetic and metabolic surgeon of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Jharkhand and Jammu and Kashmir. He is also the recipient of the coveted “President’s Gold Medal” award for being the “Best Upcoming Young Surgeon” for the year 2019 at the Annual National Surgical Conference ASICON 2019 at Bhubaneshwar.
Recently, Dr Shivanshu received the Best bariatric and diabetes surgeon of Uttar Pradesh from the Hon. Health minister of Uttar Pradesh
This dynamic young medical professional is currently working as a Consultant of Minimal Access Surgery & Bariatric Surgery at Shivani hospital and IVF, Kanpur. However, behind this charismatic persona lies years of study and hard work coupled with skillful understanding of the doctor-patient relationship. All this has made him one of the most sought-after medicos in his profession. The kind of experience that Dr. Misra has gained in his working years so far is amazing.
A Strong Base
After completing his MBBS from Govt. Stanley Medical College, Chennai, in 2009, Dr. Shivanshu did specialization in General Surgery from the same institution in 2014. Within next 2 years, he had passed the exam for Senior Resident in GI Surgery and liver transplant from GB Pant Hospital New Delhi. Subsequently, he applied for a super-specialty course in minimal access (key hole surgery) and secured an all India rank 1 and joined the mecca of laparoscopic and robotic surgery of the world, as a senior registrar in Minimal Access Surgery from GEM Hospital & Research Center, Coimbatore. Gaining academic excellence in his chosen field of specialization, Dr. Misra focused on minimal access, bariatric and diabetes surgery to accumulate experience and build his medical career on it. With the world struggling with a growing risk of obesity and diabetes, owing to different factors, new medical treatments like minimally invasive surgery and bariatric surgery have emerged as the less risky options to increase a patient’s life-span. In fact, according to a recent study, published in the UEG Journal, Bariatric (or weight loss) surgery was responsible for significant reduction in the risk of developing pancreatic and also various other gastrointestinal cancers in obese patients. So, doctors like him are, no doubt, the doctors for the future!
