New safety rules for children: Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has issued new safety rules for two-wheelers which make it mandatory for the riders to use helmets and harness belts among others while carrying children up to four years of age on the bike.
Under the new safety rules, it will be mandatory to put a safety harness on the bike and children must wear a helmet of their size.
The bike riders must also have to ensure sticking to speeds below 40 kmph while carrying children between the age group 9 months to 4 years.
The notification was issued by the Ministry of Road Transport in which it will be mandatory to put a safety harness on the bike.
Rules to be followed include:
- The Harness should be lightweight, waterproof, cushioned, and must have a 30kg load-carrying capacity.
- The motorcycle traveller also must ensure that the speed of the bike will not exceed 40km/hr when traveling with children.
The government has brought this draft notification for the first time on 25 October 2021 to amend the Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR), 1989 to introduce such safety provisions in the legal framework for the operation of vehicles in India.
And now after the objections and suggestions received from the public in respect of the said draft, rules were considered by the Central Government.
The notification also said that the BIS will issue a separate standard for children's helmets, by then smaller helmets, or bicycle helmets can be used for children.
