Hyundai Verna secures top safety rating in Global NCAP crash test

Hyundai Verna has secured 5-star rating for adult and child occupant safety in the latest Global NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme) crash tests. As far as adult occupants are concerned, the sedan has scored 28.18 points out of 34, whereas it secured 42 out of the maximum 49 points for child safety. With this, of all the cars currently on sale in the Indian markets, it has become the fifth car to secure a 5-star rating. The other 4 cars that have received 5-star safety rating are — Skoda Slavia, Volkswagen Virtus, Skoda Kushaq, Volkswagen Taigun.

Earlier on Tuesday, Hyundai Motor India said that all its models in the country would now come with six airbags as standard.  

The automaker has revealed that it participated voluntarily in the newly-introduced Bharat NCAP program, starting with three models and with plans to include more in the future.

Under the Bharat NCAP initiative, car manufacturers can choose to have their vehicles tested in accordance with the Automotive Industry Standard (AIS) 197.

Depending on the vehicle's performance in these tests, it will be assigned star ratings ranging from 0 to 5 for both adult occupants (AOP) and child occupants (COP).

Car buyers can use these star ratings as a reference to compare the safety standards of different vehicles and make informed purchasing decisions.

In light of the announcement that its mid-sized sedan, Verna, has achieved a five-star rating in both adult and child occupant protection, Hyundai Motor India MD & CEO Unsoo Kim said that safety for all is the company's utmost priority. "We have been benchmark creators in standardisation of vehicle safety features. Now, we are elated to announce the standardisation of six airbags across all models and all variants," he added.

Hyundai Motor India COO Tarun Garg said that with rising road network and increase in speed limits it is natural to upgrade the cars. Taking a big leap in the safety journey, the company has now decided to standardise six airbags in all models and all variants, he noted. The automaker is also looking to enhance ADAS (advanced driver-assistance system) and connected features across its entire product range, Garg said.
