Tokyo Paralympic Games 2020 News: Today has been a historic day for India at the Tokyo Paralympics 2020. Indian shooter Avani Lekhara created history by winning the gold medal in the women's R2 10m Air Rifle standing SH 1 event on Monday. In addition to the gold medal, India's Yogesh Kathuniya won Silver medal in discuss throw F56 at the Tokyo Paralympics. Devendra Jhajharia clinched a Silver this time in men's javelin throw F46 and Sundar Singh Gurjar also won a Bronze in the same category.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted from his official Twitter handle congratulating Avani Lekhara for her brilliant performance. He tweeted, "Phenomenal performance @AvaniLekhara! With her Gold medal at the Tokyo Paralympics 2020, Lekhara becomes the first Indian woman to win gold at the Paralympic games. According to an ANI report, Avani Lekhara started the final at a very good pace as she scored consistently above 10 points. Just two-shot of her went below 10 in the 1st competition stage which landed her in the second position. Going into the elimination stage Avani grabbed 1st spot and maintained a very healthy lead against her opponents. The Indian continued with her fine performance and ended with 249.6 points in the end.
Earlier in the qualification round, the ace shooter finished seventh with a total score of 621.7. Avani staged a good recovery after a slow start to advance to the finals of the showpiece event.
PM Modi also wished the other athletes at the Paralympic games for winning the medals today. Yogesh Kathuniya won Silver medal in discuss throw F56. PM Modi congratulated him by tweeting, "Outstanding performance by Yogesh Kathuniya. Delighted that he brings home the Silver medal. His exemplary success will motivate budding athletes. Devendra Jhajharia and Sundar Singh Gurjar won Silver and Bronze, respectively in men's javelin throw F46. Congratulating, Jhajharia, PM Modi tweeted, "Superb performance by @DevJhajharia! At present, India is at the 34th position in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games medal tally with one Gold, four Silver medals and two Bronze medals.
