Singapore Airlines has successfully carried out the world's longest flight. Singapore Airlines Flight SQ22 departed at approximately 11:35 pm yesterday for New York with 150 passengers and 17 crew on board. The flight had a journey time of 19 hours.  The flight tops the Qatar Airways Flight 921 from Auckland to Doha, which took 17 hours 40 minutes.

This was made possible by the aircraft, which has a twin-engine with a modified system that burns 25 per cent less fuel. The flight can take up to 18 hours and 45 minutes but the pilots have reserve fuel in the aircraft to make it capable of flying more than 20 hours non-stop, in case of any emergency.

The 16,700-kilometre (10,400-mile) long flight has onboard video content including films and television shows worth seven weeks' entertainment. It also has 1,200 hours of audio-visual entertainment to choose from.

The Singapore Airlines is using Airbus A350-900ULR aircraft for the world's longest flight. It can carry up to 161 passengers - 67 in business class and 94 in premium economy.

To break the workload and give a minimum of eight-hours rest to each pilot, there are two first officers and a 13-strong cabin contingent onboard the plane.

As far as food is concerned, the onboard dishes have been selected to promote the well-being of the passengers with more organic offerings.

Singapore Airlines had abandoned the flight in 2013 due to high oil prices. The then aircraft A340-500 used to have a gas-guzzling four-engine.
