Tokyo shares opened trading on Monday higher on bargain hunting after the Nikkei index dropped roughly 1,400 points over the past six trading days.

At 0915 hours, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average jumped 173.70 points, or 1.08%, higher from Friday to 16,280.42, Xinhua news agency reported.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 13.98 points, or 1.08%, to 1,312.30. 

Chinese stocks opened lower on Monday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.59% to open at 2,896.16 points.

The smaller Shenzhen index opened 0.81% lower at 10,018.51 points, Xinhua news agency reported. 

The ChiNext Index, tracking China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, was down 1.03% to open at 2,107.33 points.
