Deadly strike on Israeli Golan Heights kills 11, raises fears of escalation; Hezbollah denies involvement
Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz warned that the situation could escalate into an all-out war if Hezbollah continues its aggression.
On Saturday, a rocket attack on a soccer field in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights resulted in the deaths of at least 11 children and teenagers, marking the deadliest assault on an Israeli target along the northern border since the recent conflict with Hezbollah began. The attack has heightened concerns of a broader regional conflict.
While athletes from around the world are competing at the #Olympics2024, Hezbollah is murdering the next generation of Israeli athletes.

Israel has accused Hezbollah of orchestrating the strike, but the militant group has denied any involvement. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed severe retaliation against Hezbollah, declaring that the group "will pay a heavy price" for the attack. This incident has been described as the deadliest assault on Israeli civilians since the October 7 Hamas attack that triggered the ongoing war in Gaza. In addition to the fatalities, 20 others were reported injured.
Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz warned that the situation could escalate into an all-out war if Hezbollah continues its aggression. The attack occurred just before sunset and followed earlier cross-border skirmishes in which Hezbollah claimed to have lost three fighters. Israel's military responded by targeting a Hezbollah arms depot in Kfar Kila.
Hezbollah, which has been involved in numerous attacks against Israeli military posts, claimed these were in retaliation for Israeli airstrikes on southern Lebanese villages. The group has refuted involvement in the Majdal Shams strike, a stance that is notably unusual for them.
The U.S. National Security Council expressed strong support for Israel's security and condemned the attacks, emphasizing the need to end violence along the Blue Line. Meanwhile, Lebanon's government called for an immediate halt to hostilities without specifically addressing the Majdal Shams incident.
This latest violence is part of an ongoing exchange of fire that has intensified since October 8. Efforts by international officials to de-escalate the situation have so far been unsuccessful. As Israel and Hamas consider a ceasefire to end the nearly 10-month Gaza conflict, the broader implications of the Golan Heights attack could significantly impact regional stability.
