Baloch activist Karima Baloch, who once wished PM Modi on 'Raksha Bandhan', found dead in Toronto

Baloch activist Karima Baloch has been found dead in Toronto, Canada according to a report published by Balochistan Post. She has been living in Canada as a refugee after having escaped from Pakistan in 2016. In India, she made headlines after she praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2016 on the day of Raksha Bandhan and appealed to him to look at the plight of the people living there in Balochistan.  

The Balochistan Post said that the sudden death of the activist has raised serious concern.

Dubbed as one of the world's 100 most inspirational and influential women in 2016 by the BBC Baloch was an activist who was vocal about the Pakistan Army and government atrocities in Balochistan.  

She had accused Pakistan of taking away the local resources and eliminating people in Balochistan - the Southwestern region of the country with significant geo-strategic importance and huge untapped natural resource reserves. It is the largest of the four provinces in Pakistan in terms of land area.  

Baloch had also raised the issue of Balochistan in the United Nations sessions in Switzerland.  

According to reports, she had gone missing on Sunday (20 December) and was last seen at around 3 pm on the same day. Toronto Police had requested for public assistance in locating her.  

Her family has confirmed about the death of the activist, according to the Balochistan Post report saying that her body has been found.  

Karima Baloch was believed to be the pioneer of women rights in Balochistan. 

This is not the first time that a Pakistani dissident has been found dead. In a similar incident in May, Baloch journalist Sajid Hussain was also found dead in Sweden. He had been missing from the city of Uppsala since 2 March. 

Balochistan has been in news over the Pak Government and military atrocities and human rights violations. The resource-rich province has been gripped by an insurgency for more than 15 years.  

Political activists from Balochistan have been taking asylum in European counties to escape persecution.
