The €100 million club: Players who breached the €100 million barrier during 2023 football Summer Transfers
Let's take a look at some of the big transfers in this window that made all the news owing to them breaching the € 100 million club.
With a few major football leagues already underway for the new 2023–24 season, most teams have already made the planned changes to their squads during this summer transfer window. Some found the missing link, others reinforced their squad and some just got rid of the dead wood. As the transfer window is still open, fans are still anxiously awaiting new rumours regarding big transfer moves.
Let's take a look at some of the big transfers in this window that made all the news owing to them breaching the € 100 million club.
Harry Kane, Tottenham Hotspur to Bayern Munich
After a lot of talks, meetings, and shenanigans, the German Champions, Bayern Munich, finally signed the English captain from the London club, Tottenham Hotspur. The transfer saga surrounding the 30-year-old striker was no less than a long-running daily soap. Bayern has spent a total of € 100 million on the striker, with an additional € 20 million as add-ons. This is the highest amount of money ever spent on a single player by the Bundesliga club, making it not just the club's but the league's record signing.
Jude Bellingham, Borussia Dortmund to Real Madrid
At just 19 years old, this English midfielder has made people's heads turn when he has the football at his feet. After a brilliant season with Dortmund and a great spell with England in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, it showed what he can bring to the table. The Spanish football giant paid €103 million in transfer fees plus bonuses, along with 30% of the fixed amount as add-ons. It is a big move very early in the career for Bellingham, and Real Madrid will hope to make the most out of it.
Declan Rice, West Ham United to Arsenal
One of the best defensive midfielders among the present crop of players, the England player has been a transfer target for many clubs during this window. Once it became clear that West Ham was looking to cash in on the incoming bids, it was the London club Arsenal who offered the most money for the player. Sold at €116 million plus add-ons, Rice has become the most expensive signing in the history of Arsenal — as well as the most expensive English signing of all time.
Moises Caicedo, Brighton Hove Albion to Chelsea
This is one transfer saga that a lot of football fans will remember, as it saw Liverpool and Chelsea going head-to-head to get the Ecuadorian's signature. Chelsea came up trumps and got the signature of the 21-year-old midfielder for a whopping €134 million. Caicedo has broken the British record for the most expensive player, and only time will tell if he is worth that price tag. He also has become the most expensive player to be signed during this season's summer transfer window.
