South Africa Squad: Strengths and Weaknesses

For South Africa, their pace duo, Anrich Nortje and Sisanda Magala are out, and the South African side will only have to rely on the experience of Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi with the new ball. However, their 23-year-old pace all-rounder Marco Jansen got back into form as he picked a fifer in the last ODI match against Australia at home in September, along with the three wickets he took in their warm-up match against New Zealand. The only concern is that he has not been economical with his bowling. 

Spinners Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi are expected to do well, as they have the majority share of the wickets in the series against Australia. The only worrying factor is their unimpressive record on the Indian pitches. 

Batting is the only department where the skipper, Temba Bavuma, has no concerns. The opening pair of Bavuma and Quinton de Kock has worked well for the Proteas. Along with that, hard hitters like David Miller and Henrich Klaasen have the ability to chance their arms and taking the attack to the opposition bowlers. 

Armed with such a potent batting line-up, South Africa can really mess up the Sri Lankan bowling attack.

Sri Lanka Squad: Strengths and Weaknesses

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, has already been robbed of their best white ball spinner—Wanindu Hasaranga—and also devoid of the services of frontline pacers Dushmantha Chameera and Lahiru Madushanka due to injuries. 

With key bowlers out of the squad, Maheesh Theekshana and their promising slow left-arm-spinner, Dunith Wellalage, will have to do all the heavy lifting in turning conditions. While Lahiru Kumara, Dilshan Madushanka, Matheesha Pathirana, and Kasun Rajith will take charge in the pace department.

In the batting department, Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Perera, and Sadeera Samarawickrama will have to shoulder the responsibility, along with their experienced wicketkeeper batter Kusal Mendis, who has shown his hitting prowess and adds great value to the team.

The main concern with this Sri Lankan side is their confidence going into the match, as they have lost their last three ODI matches. One of which was against India in the Asia Cup 2023 Final, and the other two were their warmup games against Bangladesh and Afghanistan.
