R Praggnanandhaa plays Magnus Carlsen in FIDE Chess World Cup Final: Considered a long-time successor of former five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand, 18-year-old wonderkid R Praggnanandhaa is on the verge of writing his name among the greats of chess.
With a staggering display of focus, intent, and discipline in the FIDE World Cup in Baku, Azerbaijan, he has qualified for the Candidates Tournament, which will decide the challenger to current world champion Ding Liren.
He is the first Indian to qualify for the Candidates Tournament after Viswanathan Anand. Praggnanandhaa showed his ability to handle pressure and go toe-to-toe with the finest in the business by defeating World No. 1 and former classical champion Magnus Carlsen in an online event last year.
Praggnanandhaa will face Carlsen again today, August 24, in a third game — a tiebreaker — after two fierce keenly-fought matches between them ended in draw.
R Praggnanandhaa vs Magnus Carlsen, FIDE Chess World Cup Final: How much will the winner get?
According to reports, FIDE has a highest-ever total prize pool of $1.83 million for the World Cup this year. The money will be distributed among the 206 contestants in ten categories, in which the participants who were eliminated in even the first round also stand to get a share.
First round: The report states that participants who were eliminated in the first round will get $3000 from the share.
Second round: Participants who are eliminated in the second round will receive $6000.
Third round: $10,000 has been earmarked for those eliminated in the third round.
Fourth round: $16,000 for those that didn't make it beyond the fourth round.
Fifth round: Those eliminated in the fifth-round stand to receive $25,000; and
Sixth round: And $35,000 will be given to those eliminated in the sixth round.
The business end of the event starts after the sixth round, as the qualified participants enter the last four of the chess tournament. Here, the fourth-placed will receive a total of $50,000, and the third-placed will wins a prize money of $60,000.
Now coming to the last two spots. With R Praggnanandhaa and Magnus Carlsen competing for the title, if R Praggnanandhaa manages to beat Carlsen, and win the title, he will receive $110,000 as the prize money. The runner-up will receive $80,000 from the share.
