T20 World Cup 2024: India beat South Africa by 7 runs, win second T20 World Cup title
Meanwhile, Virat Kohli also announced retirement from T20 International cricket, says its time for next generation to take over.
India vs South Africa: India won the second T20 World Cup on Saturday, June 29 at Barbados' Kensington Oval, when competing in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 final against South Africa. India set a goal of 177 runs and won by seven runs.
India had won first T20 World Cup in 2007.
Posting on social media site X, PM Modi praised the Indian team and said:
CHAMPIONS!
"Our team brings the T20 World Cup home in STYLE! We are proud of the Indian Cricket Team.
This match was HISTORIC."
"Indian cricket team won World Cup and also hearts of crores of Indians; no small achievement that it did not lose a single match," Modi added.
Noting that India did not lose a single match, the prime minister said it is not a small achievement in a tournament where so many countries participated.
"I am over the moon that I could do something special for India," said Jasprit Bumrah. "I don't usually cry after a game but the emotions are taking over," he added.
Commenting on India's victory, Hardik Pandya said, "It's very emotional, something was not clicking, but this was something the whole nation wanted. Special for me after my six months, I haven't spoken a word, things have been unfair, but I knew there'd be a time I could shine. An opportunity like this makes it all the more special. We always believed, stayed calm, let the pressure come to them. Last over, I knew I had to execute my plans. All of a sudden my run-up speed increases. I have been in this situation, I enjoy the pressure situation. The emotions were on show as the team burst into tears following the final ball and the importance of the victory was clearly visible on Pandya's face. He has answered the haters in the most beautiful way possible and cemented his legacy in Indian cricket."
"Hard to sum up what we've been through for last 3-4 years. We worked very hard as a team," commented India captain Rohit Sharma on T20 World Cup win.
Meanwhile, Virat Kohli also announced retirement from T20 International cricket, says it's time for next generation to take over.
"This was my last t20 World Cup, and this is what we wanted to achieve," said Kohli after the match. "One day you feel you can't get a run, then things happen. God is great, and I got the job done for the team on the day it mattered. Now or never, last T20 for India, wanted to make the most of it. Wanted to lift the cup, wanted to respect the situation rather than force it. This was an open secret, it's time for the next generation to take over, some amazing players will take the team forward and keep the flag waving high," Kohli added.
