A lot has changed since then, the players, the coaches, and the style of cricket, but the emotions still remain as India will go against Sri Lanka in Match 33 of the ICC Men's ODI World Cup 2023 on Thursday, November 2, at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

India and Sri Lanka have faced each other a total of nine times in the ODI World Cups, with both teams having four wins under their belt, with one match ending with no result. 

Earlier, Sri Lanka was a force to be reckoned with, and they had some dominant performances against the Indian contingent. However, recently, India has been enjoying the upper hand against its island neighbours.

Match 1) 1979, Match 9, Prudential World Cup, Manchester

This was the first time these two teams encountered each other, with Sri Lanka winning the match by 47 runs. Courtesy of three brilliant half-centuries by Sunil Wettimuny, Roy Dias, and Duleep Mendis, Sri Lanka posted a target of 238 in 60 overs, losing five wickets in the process. Mohinder Amarnath picked up three wickets. India, in the second innings, crumbled within 191 runs in 54.1 overs, with no batter reaching the 40-run mark. Somachandra De Silva and Tony Opatha picked up three wickets each for Sri Lanka.

Match 2) 1992, Match 9, Benson & Hedges World Cup, Mackay

This is the only match that ended with no result, as rain washed out the game. Initially, the match was reduced to 20 overs per side, and a helicopter was used to dry the pitch, but as play resumed, it rained again, leading to the game being called off.

Match 3) 1996, Match 24, Wills World Cup, Delhi

In this match, Sachin Tendulkar played one of the best innings for India, where he made a brilliant 137 runs off 137 balls, helping set a target of 272 runs in 50 overs. Mohammad Azharuddin complimented Sachin's knock with a well-made 70 off 80 balls.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, fought well, reaching the target in 48.4 overs, losing four wickets in the process. Sanath Jayasuriya and Hashan Tillakaratne scored 76 off 76 balls and 70 off 98 balls, winning the match by six wickets for Sri Lanka.

Match 4) 1996, 1st Semi-final, Wills World Cup, Kolkata

This was the second time these two sides met in this edition of the World Cup, and again, Sri Lanka emerged victorious. Sri Lanka posted a target of 251 runs in 50 overs, courtesy of Aravinda de Silva and Roshan Mahanama, who made 66 off 47 balls and 58 off 101 balls, respectively. In the second innings, India suffered a terrible batting collapse. With the fall of the eighth wicket, some sections of the crowd vented their anger by setting fire to the stands and throwing bottles at the fielders. The match was stopped, and when it resumed, the crowd again threw water bottles at the boundary riders. Finally, match referee Clive Lloyd stopped the proceedings and awarded the match to Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka went on to win their first-ever World Cup trophy by beating Australia in the finals. 

Match 5) 1999, Match 21, ICC ODI World Cup, Taunton

This was the first time India managed a win against the Lankans in the World Cups, and that too in an emphatic fashion. India set a mammoth target of 374 runs in 50 overs. Captain Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid went rampant against the Sri Lankan bowlers, scoring 183 off 158 balls and 145 off 129 balls, respectively. Sri Lanka crumbled within 216 runs in 42.3 overs, with Robin Singh picking up five wickets for India. India won the match by a margin of 157 runs.  
 

Match 6) 2003, Super Six, ICC ODI World Cup, Johannesburg

This was India's biggest win against Sri Lanka in the World Cup. India posted a target of 292 runs on the board in 50 overs, courtesy of a brilliant 97 of 120 balls by Sachin Tendulkar. Virender Sehwag and Sourav Ganguly also played their part by scoring 66 off 86 balls and 48 off 53 balls, respectively. Sri Lanka had one of the worst batting collapses, as they were bowled out within 109 runs in 23 overs. Five Sri Lankan players were out for a duck, with Kumar Sangakkara only reaching the 30-run mark.

Javagal Srinath and Ashish Nehra picked up four wickets each, with India winning the match by 183 runs.

Match 7) 2007, Group B, ICC ODI World Cup, Port of Spain

Sri Lanka got their revenge in the match as they beat India by 69 runs. Sri Lanka set a target of 255 runs in 50 overs, losing six wickets in the process. Upul Tharanga and Chamara Silva both scored two well-made half-centuries. Despite Rahul Dravid's fighting 60 off 82 balls, India were bowled out within 185 runs. Muthiah Muralidaran picked up three wickets for Sri Lanka.

Match 8) 2011, Final, ICC ODI World Cup, Wankhede

"Dhoni finishes off in style. A magnificent strike into the crowd! India lifts the World Cup after 28 years!”-These words by Ravi Shastri still echo in the minds of billions of Indian supporters who witnessed one of the greatest nights in the history of Indian cricket. This was the match when India won their second ODI World Cup as they beat Sri Lanka by six wickets. 

Sri Lanka's batting posted a good target of 275 in 50 overs, with skipper Mahela Jayawardene playing a brilliant knock of 103 runs not out in 88 balls.

India in the second innings had a poor start, with two wickets of Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar falling early. However, a sensible 97 off 122 balls by Gautam Gambhir stabilised the innings, with captain MS Dhoni scoring a brilliant 91 off 79 balls, taking India to their second ODI World Cup win.

Match 9) 2019, Match 44, ICC ODI World Cup, Leeds

This was India's last encounter with Sri Lanka in the World Cups, in which India had a thumping win against their island neighbours. Sri Lanka batted first, posting a target of 265 runs in 50 overs, losing seven wickets in the process.  Angelo Mathews played a brilliant knock of 113 runs off 128 balls, along with Lahiru Thirimanne scoring 53 off 68 balls. Jasprit Bumrah picked up three wickets for India.

Indian openers KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma had a field day against the Lankans that day. Both made brilliant centuries, and India cruised to an emphatic win by seven wickets.
