India ODI World Cup Squad 2023 announced: Batter KL Rahul became a surprise inclusion, while Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan, and Suryakumar Yadav are set to make their ICC World Cup debuts as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday, September 5, announced the 15-man Team India squad for the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023. In an X post (formerly Twitter), the BCCI made the announcement for the quadrennial event, which is scheduled to start with an England-New Zealand match at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, on October 5.

There are no major changes made to the squad, as it looks almost the same as the one playing in the ongoing Asia Cup. However, the inclusion of Rahul was a surprise as the batter has not played any matches since returning from an injury and has also been ruled out of India's first two matches at the Aisa Cup.

Moreover, the lack of a reliable and proper middle-order attack might also create major issues for Team India. Along with Rahul, Shreyas Iyer also recovered from an injury to make a comeback to the Indian squad for the Asia Cup.

Additionally, Ishan Kishan, being an opener, is still not being tested enough in the middle order. However, playing in the middle-order, he proved his worth by scoring 82 against Pakistan on Saturday (September 2) at an Asia Cup 2023 group-stage match.

Suryakumar Yadav is no doubt a reliable middle-order mainstay and the No. 1-ranked ICC T20I batter, but his stats in the ODI format are not something that can match his fireworks in T20.

Coming to the bowling options, left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav has been a regular starter for India. However, he lacks the experience of spinners like Ashwin and Chahal on the pitches of the subcontinent. Also, it can be a cause for concern as India is playing more pacers than spinners, which might not be ideal for subcontinent pitches, traditionally favouring spinners.

India will be playing against the five-time world champions, Australia, in their opening match of the tournament on October 8 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. The final of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 will be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on November 19.
