Asian Games 2023: Aiming for a rich haul of 100 medals at the ongoing Asian Games in China's Hangzhou, Indian athletes seem to be on track, as on Wednesday (September 27, 2023), shooter Sift Kaur Samra set a world record in the women's 50m rifle 3 positions individual event to clinch the fifth gold for the country. With Sift's gold, India's medal tally at the Asian Games has swelled to 22 medals, which include five gold, seven silver, and 10 bronze medals.
While Indians have won medals in five sports—shooting, rowing, cricket, sailing, and equestrian—it is the breathtaking performances of shooters with three gold, four silver, and five bronze that have helped the Indian contingent jump to seventh place in the Asian Games medal tally, led by China.
Earlier, the Indian shooting team, consisting of Rudrankksh Patil, Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar, and Divyansh Singh Panwar, bagged the first gold for the country in the men's 10m air rifle event. Their feat was followed by women shooters in the 25m pistol (team) event, and on Wednesday at the 50m rifle (3-position individual) event.
The Indian women's cricket team too underlined its importance at the Asian Games, beating Sri Lanka in the women's T20 event title clash to grab the gold medal.
The Indian dressage team, featuring Hriday Chheda, Anush Agarwalla, Divyakriti Singh, and Sudipti Hajela, too highlighted its potential, winning a historic gold in the Asian quadrenniel event for the first time in 41 years.
