IPL 2023 Royal Challengers Bangalore Team profile
Led by one of the best batsmen of our era, Virat Kohli, for most of their history, Royal Challengers Bangalore has been one of the most formidable teams in the Indian Premier League.
Despite having an outstanding record in IPL, the team has never had the chance to lay its hands on the winners' trophy.
RCB have been runners-up in 2009, 2011, and 2016, and six times, they finished in top 3, including in the last two editions, but an IPL title has always eluded them.
RCB have played 227 games in 15 editions of the IPL with 107 wins and 113 losses.
They won two games and lost one in a tie-breaker, while four of their matches ended without a result.
Royal Challengers Bangalore have almost retained their core players (18 of them) and purchased seven players (five of them uncapped) in the IPL 2023 auction.
The team is led by South African explosive batsman, Faf Du Plessis.
The batting line-up features Kohli, the highest run-getter of IPL with 6,624 runs in 223 matches, Australian Glenn Maxwell, Rajat Patidar, and Dinesh Karthik will consolidate the batting line-up.
In-form Mohammed Siraj, Sri Lankan leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga, the highest wicket-taker for the team in IPL 2022, and Australian pacer Josh Hazlewood will strengthen the bowling line-up.
Royal Challengers Bangalore's Record in 2022
In 2022 IPL, Royal Challengers Bangalore made the second Qualifier but were ousted by eventual runners-up Rajasthan Royals by seven wickets.
RCB played 16 matches and won nine of them.
IPL 2022 saw a big change in RCB as Kohli gave up captaincy mid-season and Du Plessis was made the new captain, and Sanjay Bangar the new coach.
The team started on a good note, had a slump midway and recovered in the last phase.
But their star players didn't click as a collective force.
Rather, they waxed and waned during the midway, and faltered in the second Qualifier.
Their find of the season was Hasaranga, who turned out to be the second-highest wicket-taker in the tournament with 26 wickets in 16 matches.
Rajat Patidar impressed with his batting skills with 333 runs in just seven innings.
But other than him, RCB’s starry batting line-up couldn’t intimidate opponent bowlers the way it was expected to.
Du Plessis scored 468 runs in 16 matches, the highest for the team in the season, but he blew hot and cold throughout the tournament. Kohli was off-colour with a tournament aggregate of 341 runs in 16 matches with just two fifties.
Opener Anuj Rawat failed miserably with 129 runs in eight matches and lost his slot midway through the season.
Maxwell performed well in patches with 301 runs in 13 matches, and Siraj looked a pale shadow of his current self as he turned out to be extra expensive with an economy rate of 10.07 and a poor record of nine wickets in 15 matches.
