IPL 2023: From MS Dhoni to Piyush Chawla: These five players are likely to bid farewell to their IPL career
IPL 2023: Some of them are past their prime, some are aged, while others have got a handful of matches in last few IPL seasons. IPL veterans like Ishant Sharma, Dinesh Karthik and Amit Mishra can also call it a day in IPL
IPL 2023: Like any IPL season, the 2023 edition of the tournament is expected to be a testing ground for colts, who may serve cricket for a long; and a farewell deck for the experienced, who may walk into the sunset after serving the game for a long.
Sportspersons have an uncanny habit of bidding farewell to a sport when teams start ignoring them.
Cricketers are no exception. But, many sense their exit in time and hang up their boots before anyone calls them out for underperformance.
Whether better sense prevails and they quit on their own, or critics make them call it quits, the 16th edition of IPL is most likely to have cricketers who may retire from IPL after the season gets over. ZeeBiz brings you the list of five such cricketers.
List of players who may quit IPL after this season
Amit Mishra
The 40-year-old Amit Mishra got a surprise call from Lucknow Super Giants this year.
His impeccable record of 166 wickets in 154 matches at IPL, the fourth-highest in IPL, puts him in the category of tournament legend.
But the leg-spinner is also over the hill.
He last played in IPL in 2021, when he got just four matches, while in 2020, he appeared in just three matches.
If his team ignores him in a similar way this season, he may probably be playing his last IPL tournament.
Piyush Chawla
Picked by Mumbai Indians this season, Piyush Chawla has been playing in IPL since its beginning in 2008.
His 157 wickets in 165 matches, the fifth-highest in IPL history, speak volumes of his importance for his teams.
The leg-spinner has the reputation of rescuing his teams on many occasions, but he has been off the radar for some years, and that makes his place ominous in the team.
Chawla played his last IPL in 2021 when he got just one match, while in 2020, he got seven matches.
Mumbai Indians are without Jasprit Bumrah this season and they may need a bowler to strengthen their attack.
However, if Chawla fails to find a place and sits on the bench, it may be the end of his IPL journey.
Ishant Sharma
Veteran India bowler Ishant Sharma was lucky that Delhi Capitals picked him for this IPL season.
The pacer played his Test in November 2021 against South Africa and played in IPL in the same year.
However, it was only in 2019, that he got a good number of matches (13) to showcase his talent.
In 2020 and 2021, he got just one and three matches, respectively.
Delhi Capitals have given a lifeline to the bowler, but the 35-year-old is past his prime.
It will be a challenge for him to get matches in front of young bowlers and, if selected for a few games, to make an impact.
MS Dhoni
Former World Cup-winning India skipper MS Dhoni retired from international cricket in 2020, but he is yet to bid farewell to IPL.
He has been with Chennai Super Kings since IPL's inaugural season in 2008, barring two years when the team was banned in 2015.
He has led the team to four titles in 2010, 2011, 2018 and 2021, and two Champions League trophies in 2010 and 2014.
CSK fans are highly emotionally attached to Dhoni and the skipper has often hinted to end his IPL career in front of Chennai crowds.
Though he has never spoken of his retirement publicly, there is a high possibility that the 41-year-old may play his last IPL group match at the Chepauk stadium when CSK take on Delhi Capitals on May 20.
Dinesh Karthik
The wicketkeeper-batsman proved his mettle in IPL 2022 as he emerged as one of the best finishers in the tournament.
Playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore, he underlined that he was not a spent force.
His performance garnered attention from Team India selectors as he was picked for the T20 team on the South African tour and the T20 World Cup squad.
But he will turn 38 this year. Age is not on his side and he may also take retirement from T20.
