Her remarks appeared to be an attempt to resolve the deadlock between her government and junior doctors who are protesting the rape and murder of a female colleague at RG Kar Medical College.

Urged the protesters to return to work, the West Bengal CM said that she has no greed for the post but is rather more concerned about justice for the victim and for the treatment for ordinary citizens.

"I want justice for the victim, I am only concerned about ordinary people getting medical service," she said, assuring that no action will be taken against the protesters.

"I tried my best to sit with the junior doctors. I waited three days for them that they should have come and settle their problem. Even when they didn't accept the verdict of the Supreme Court, I waited three days with my highest officials, including Chief Secretary, Home Secretary, DG and my MoS. I am sorry. I apologize to the people of this country and the world who are supporting them (doctors), please give your support. I don't have any problem," said the CM.

"We want justice for the victim. We want justice for the common people. We want justice for the treatment of common people," Banerjee said in a press conference, after the proposed talks between her and a 30-member delegation of the West Bengal Junior Doctors Forum (WBJDF) failed to materialise.

The protesting doctors refused to budge from their demand to live telecast the meeting.

The Chief Minister said that live-streaming won't be possible as demanded by protesting doctors.

"Our government has been insulted. But the common people do not know that there is a political colour to it. They do not want justice, they only want the chair. I am ready to step down. I do not want the (Chief Minister) post," she said after the doctors' delegation didn't turn up for the meeting.

The RG Kar matter, being probed by the CBI, is pending before the Supreme Court, said the CM.

The case is related to the rape and murder of a second-year postgraduate medical student inside the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College on August 9.
