Lok Sabha Elections Phase 5 voting latest news update: Voters queued up in large numbers at the polling booths before 7 am in Mumbai on Monday as the coastal city went into polls amid Phase 5 of the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. The fifth phase--voting for which will continue till 6 pm--covers 49 Lok Sabha seats spread across six states and two Union territories (UTs). Among these seats, 14 are in Uttar Pradesh, 13 in Maharashtra, seven in West Bengal, five in Bihar, three in Jharkhand, five in Odisha, and one each in Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. The fifth phase, which covers the lowest number of Lok Sabha seats among the seven phases, will see almost nine crore voters deciding the fate of 695 candidates, including Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, BJP leaders Rajnath Singh, Smriti Irani, Rajiv Pratap Rudy, Piyush Goyal, Ujjwal Nikam and Karan Bhushan Singh, LJP (Ramvilas) chief Chirag Paswan, JKNC chief Omar Abdullah, and RJD leader Rohini Acharya.

The 49 Lok Sabha constituencies undergoing polling in Phase 5 include 14 seats in Uttar Pradesh, including Raebareli, Amethi and Lucknow.  

The almost nine crore voters eligible to vote in Phase 5 include 4.69 crore males, 4.26 crore females, and 5,409 third-gender individuals, according to the Election Commission of India (ECI).

"It's a moment of pride to participate in an election of 140 crore people," said RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das after casting his ballot with his family in the coastal city.

"The process of voting today was very smooth and I would like to congratulate the Election Commission of India and all the officials who have been working throughout the country. It is really a moment of pride for every Indian to vote in these elections. I appeal to every voter to come out and vote," the RBI Governor remarked. 

Union Minister and BJP leader Piyush Goyal also cast his vote. "This election has given me the opportunity to meet several people and take their blessings. Being a Mumbaikar, the way people have hosted me is a wonderful feeling...My family members have come from abroad to exercise their right to vote," Goyal said.

As many as 2,000 flying squads, 2,105 static surveillance teams, 881 video surveillance teams, and 502 video viewing teams are in place to ensure peaceful voting across the 94,732 polling stations, according to the ECI.

In the first four phases, a voter turnout of 66.95 per cent has been recorded.
