BJP claims victory, SP concedes defeat
The BJP claimed victory in the bypoll to the Rampur Assembly seat while the Samajwadi Party conceded defeat even before the counting was completed and the results could be announced.
BJP candidate Akash Saxena told the reporters that he would work to develop Rampur as an industrial hub. He said that Rampur had broken the shackles of slavery after 50 years and had chosen the BJP.
SP candidate Asim Raza, while leaving the counting centre, said that there was no election because 2.25 lakh people were not allowed to cast their vote.
"It was the police that held this election and cast its vote. This is no election," he said as he walked away with his supporters.
Asim Raza had been leading till the 21st round, but then suddenly the trend changed and the BJP started leading.
UP bypolls: SP leading in Mainpuri, Rampur Sadar, RLD in Khatauli
Samajwadi Party candidate Dimple Yadav has taken a comfortable lead in the Mainpuri Lok Sabha constituency, while nominees of the RLD and the SP are ahead in the Khatauli and the Rampur Sadar seats respectively, according to trends for the bypolls in Uttar Pradesh.
While Dimple Yadav, wife of SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, has taken a lead of about one lakh votes over her nearest rival BJP candidate Raghuraj Singh Shakya, RLD's Madan Bhaiya is leading by over 8,486 votes in Khatauli over the BJP's Rajkumar Saini, the Election Commission said.
Samajwadi Party candidate Asim Raja is leading from Rampur Sadar over the BJP's Akash Saxena by a margin of 4,737 votes.
Bypolls for these seats were held on December 5.

-Recalling that Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya had said the bypolls results will be an indication of 2024 Lok Sabha elections, SP state president Naresh Uttam said trends now show that the SP will be ahead in the next parliamentary polls.
-"Despite misuse of official machinery, Dimple Yadav is winning by a record margin. This shows people are fed up with the BJP misrule," he said.
-In a tweet, Pragatisheel Samajwadi party (Lohia) founder Shivpal Singh Yadav thanked the people of Mainpuri and also his assembly constituency Jaswant Nagar, which lies in it.
-"We have taken a lead of one lakh and it will be historic as many rounds are left," he said.
-The Mainpuri parliamentary constituency, which fell vacant after the death of SP patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav, had registered 54.01 per cent voting.
-The Khatauli assembly segment had recorded 56.46 per cent polling on December 5 while Rampur Sadar had seen a low 33 per cent.
-Bypoll in Rampur Sadar and Khatauli were necessitated due to the disqualification of SP MLA Azam Khan and BJP MLA Vikram Singh Saini following their conviction by separate courts in different matters.
-Following defeats in Azamgarh and the Rampur Lok Sabha bypoll, considered the SP's bastions, the Mainpuri parliamentary and the Rampur and Khatauli assembly by-elections have become important for the Akhilesh Yadav-led party and his ally RLD.
-Though the outcome of the bypolls would not make much difference to the government at the Centre as well as in Uttar Pradesh as the BJP has a comfortable majority at both the places, a win would give psychological advantage to the winner in the run-up to the 2024 general election.
- Counting of votes began Thursday morning for Rampur assembly seat in Uttar Pradesh where bypoll was held earlier this week, officials said.
- The counting started at 8 am and the results are likely to come in by the afternoon, they said.
- Rampur had seen a low 33 per cent voting.
-Bypoll in Rampur Sadar and Khatauli has been necessitated due to disqualification of SP MLA Azam Khan and BJP MLA Vikram Singh Saini following their conviction by separate courts in different matters.
-The bypolls are witnessing a direct contest between the ruling BJP and the opposition Samajwadi Party-Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) alliance. The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the Congress are not in the fray.
- In the Rampur Sadar assembly segment, the BJP has fielded Akash Saxena, the son of former party legislator Shiv Bahadur Saxena, against Azam Khan's protege Asim Raja.

- Considered the "Muslim face" of SP, Azam Khan had won from Rampur assembly constituency for the tenth time in the state polls held early this year. The by-election is being held for the seat due to Khan's disqualification after he was sentenced to three years in a hate speech case.
- Azam Khan, who is facing over 80 cases including cheating and land-grabbing, was released on bail in May after 27 months.
- Azam Khan's close aide Asim Raza, who was defeated in the parliamentary bye-election five months ago, has been fielded by SP from the assembly seat.
- Khan's known detractor Akash Saxena is the BJP nominee in the by-election.
- Samajwadi Party leader Ram Gopal Yadav has written a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner demanding that the bypoll in Rampur assembly constituency be cancelled and held again, a party release said.
- In his letter to CEO Rajeev Kumar, Yadav accused the state administration of doing large-scale rigging during voting in the bypoll, the release said.
-He said that the voters were prevented from exercising their franchise and were beaten up by police.
-The SP national general secretary also attached photographs of "police brutality" as evidence in his letter, the release said.
-This time the percentage of voting in Rampur has been much less as compared to the previous elections, which warrants cancelling of previous poll and holding of a re-election, the leader contended in his letter.
-The SP alleged that the government used its police powers to prevent voters from a particular religion from exercising their franchise.
-In a press conference at the party's state headquarters held earlier in the day, SP Chief Whip in the state assembly, Manoj Pandey said, "We appeal to all the constitutional institutions including the Election Commission to investigate the excesses (of power) during the Rampur by-election by taking suo motu cognizance, because this matter is not about any person, but about the protection of democracy."

-In the bypoll on Monday, a meagre 33.94 per cent of the total eligible electorate cast its ballot.
- In the Lok Sabha bypoll held in June on the same seat, 41 per cent polling was recorded, while in the 2022 assembly poll, it was 56.35 per cent.
- Azam Khan's family has also accused the police of not allowing Muslim voters to leave their homes and of using force against those came out to cast their votes.
