Karnataka Election date 2023: The Election Commission of India on Wednesday announced the full schedule for the Karnataka Legislative Assembly elections. The term of the 224-member Karnataka Assembly ends on May 24. With the announcement of the poll dates, the Model Code of Conduct has come into force with immediate effect.

Also, by-elections in Jalandhar parliamentary constituency in Punjab and Jharsuguda in Odisha, Chhanbey and Suar in Uttar Pradesh and  Sohiong in Meghalaya will be held on May 10. The results will be declared on May 13.

In the current Assembly, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has 119 MLAs and the Opposition party Congress has 75, Janta Dal (Secular), an ally of the Congress in the state, has 28 seats. 

The ruling BJP has set a target of winning at least 150 seats this time. Meanwhile, Congress and its ally JD(S) have already announced their first list of 124 and 93 candidates respectively.

According to Chief Election Commissioner 9CEC) Rajiv Kumar, ECI is committed to delivering transparent elections. There are around 5.2 crores of voters in Karnataka and those who are above the age of 80 years are over 12 lakh. In a first, the Election Commission is will allow PwD electors and those aged above 80 years to vote from their homes. 

"This time, the Election Commission will set 58,282 polling stations across the state," Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar said. Out of this, 1,320 polling stations are going to be managed by women officials.

Kumar said that 240 polling stations will be developed as model polling stations.

When it comes to first-time voters, the number has increased from 2018-19 by 9.17 lakhs in Karnataka.
