Delhi Mayor Election Result 2023: The Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) Shelly Oberoi was elected as Delhi's new mayor on Wednesday. She defeated BJP's Rekha Gupta by 34 votes. While Oberoi got 150 votes, Gupta received 116 votes out of the total 266 votes polled.

AAP's Shelly Oberoi is an assistant professor at the University of Delhi. She is also a lifetime member of the Indian Commerce Association. Oberoi contested from ward 86 — East Patel Nagar.

She completed her Doctorate in Philosophy from the School of Management Studies (SOMS), Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU).

She is also the recipient of the best paper awards at different national and international conferences. Besides she won a Gold medal (Prof Manubhai Shah Award) at ICA Conference and has also been felicitated with the "Miss Kamla Rani Prize".

The AAP leader, when asked what will be her priorities as a mayor said, "The 10 guarantees that CM Arvind Kejriwal has given to people, and the dreams that he has foreseen for Delhi, we will work on them." 

The mayor thanked Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, and the people of Delhi. She also thanked Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena.

"My thanks are due also to the Supreme Court, because of whose order the mayor election was held today peacefully," Oberoi said.

"I will give the best in my term, under the leadership of Arvind Kejriwal. Work will officially begin in Delhi from tomorrow onwards, and inspection of landfill sites will be done in the next three months," she said.

After the win, Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia congratulated her and tweeted," The goons lost, the public won. Many congratulations to all the workers as AAP candidate has become the mayor in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. Once again whole hearted gratitude to the people of Delhi. Many many congratulations to the first Mayor @OberoiShelly of AAP."

The election of the mayor took place in the backdrop of a Supreme Court order recently ruling against the voting rights of 10 aldermen appointed by Lt Governor VK Saxena.

The previous three attempts to elect Delhi mayor were fruitless with the AAP and BJP fighting it out in the MCD House meetings over the issue of appointment of protem mayor and aldermen.
