Sagardighi by-poll election result 2023 Live: In a major setback to the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal, the Left Front-backed Congress won the by-poll to the Sagardighi Assembly constituency in Murshidabad district, considered a stronghold of the ruling party.
Congress` Bayron Biswas defeated Debasish Bandopadhyay of the Trinamool by a margin of 22,980 votes. The BJP`s Dilip Saha finished third.
After 16 rounds of counting, Biswas, who enjoys the support of the Left, bagged 87,667 votes, according to the Election Commission (EC) website.
Debasish Banerjee of the TMC garnered 64,681 votes, while Dilip Saha of the BJP received 25,815 votes, the EC website revealed.
Byelection to the constituency, seen as a prestige fight for state Congress president Adhir Chowdhury in his home district of Murshidabad, was necessitated following the death of state minister Subrata Saha in December last year.
Sagardighi Assembly constituency is in the Murshidabad district of West Bengal.
As many as 73 per cent of the 2.3 lakh voters exercised their franchise in the Sagardighi by-poll on February 27, 2023. The by-poll to the Sagardighi assembly seat was necessitated by the death of its three-time TMC MLA and state minister Subrata Saha in December last year.
India awaits the final results of three state Assemblies — Tripura, Nagaland and Meghalaya — and a few key constituencies including Erode in Tamil Nadu, Pune and Chinchwad in Maharashtra, and Sagardighi in West Bengal, which would set the tone of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Sagardighi by-poll result 2023: Congress’ reaction on victory
Reacting to the victory, state Congress president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said that Sagardighi has proved that a proper and well-tuned alliance, along with a free and fair election can ensure the Trinamool Congress` defeat.
"This victory will strengthen the Left Front-Congress alliance in the coming days, and we will together fight the BJP and the Trinamool Congress in the polls," he said.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee told media persons on Thursday that her party had been defeated by an "unethical" alliance.
"Officially, the Congress and Left Front were in alliance at Sagardighi, but unofficially the BJP was also a part of the alliance. The common goal of the BJP, Congress and the Left Front was to defeat the Trinamool Congress at any cost,” the CM said in her statement.
“However, our struggle against such an unholy nexus will continue and the people of West Bengal will give them a fitting reply in the coming days," she said.

"The result proves that Mamata Banerjee is not invincible. We will re-establish democracy in West Bengal. We have fought this election in alliance with the Left, and it is a victory of the coalition. People have reposed their faith in us and discarded both the TMC and the BJP," Chowdhury told reporters.

Barring stray incidents, the polling process in Sagardighi by-poll had been peaceful on February 27, 2023.
Central armed forces personnel have been deployed at all 246 polling booths. The fate of nine candidates contesting in the Sagardighi by-poll was decided by around 2,50,000 voters of Sagardighi assembly constituency.
Each polling booth was kept under CCTV coverage. The 246 polling booths were divided in 22 sectors, and one quick response team was also assigned for each of these sectors.
On the day of voting, TMC accused the CRPF of trying to influence the voters.
"Sagardighi Bypolls is a SHINING example of @BJP4Bengal's UNDEMOCRATIC approach and their BLATANT MISUSE of power. Elections are won by catering to people, BJP, not by HARASSING them. Take a look at how the CRPF is trying to influence voters," the party tweeted while sharing a video.
The opposition BJP, however, charged the TMC with trying to create an issue out of a non-issue.
"The CRPF has put up a strong vigil, and that's the reason behind the TMC's allegation and displeasure," BJP state spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya said.
The Chief Election Officer's office said they didn't receive any complaints.
