Chhattisgarh Election Result 2023, Chhattisgarh Assembly Election Results 2023 HIGHLIGHTS: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) wrested power from Congress in Chhattisgarh in what looked like a neck-and-neck battle in the first few hours of the counting of votes on December 4, 2023, winning 54 seats in the 90-member state Legislative Assembly. The Congress party bagged 35 seats, in stark contrast to the 68 it bagged in the last polls, and the Gondvana Gantantra Party won one.

Most exit polls had predict a close battle between the ruling Congress and the main opposition, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), for control of the 90-member state Assembly of Chhattisgarh. Check out the full list of winners here

    Several of the MPs who contested the assembly polls and won will have to quit one of the seats in the next 14 days, else they stand to lose their Parliament membership, "If they don't, on expiry of 14 days, they will lose their membership of Parliament. However, they can continue as member of the state legislative assembly," Constitution expert and former Lok Sabha secretary general PDT Achari said, citing the Prevention of Simultaneous Membership Rule issued by the president in 1950 under Article 101 of the Constitution.

    The BJP fielded 21 MPs, including Union ministers Narendra Singh Tomar, Prahlad Singh Patel and Faggan Singh Kulaste, in the Assembly polls—seven each in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, four in Chhattisgarh and three in Telangana.

    Former Chhattisgarh CM and BJP leader Raman Singh has already said that his party will form a government in the state. "We will have 42-55 seats in the state," he tells news agency ANI. 

     

    All eyes are now on the final numbers to assess the fate of the 1,181 candidates in the state. According to the ECI, 90 returning officers, 416 assistant returning officers, 4,596 enumerators, and 1,699 micro-observers have been appointed for the counting process. The ECI has also appointed one counting observer for each of the 90 Assembly seats.
