Eid-Ul-Fitr 2023: Muslims across India celebrate Eid, PM Modi and several chief ministers extend their greetings
Marking the culmination of the one-month-long fasting, Muslims in India celebrated Eid-ul-Fitr with fervour and festivities on Saturday. Cutting across age and economic barriers, hundreds of faithful thronged mosques. Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations began in the national capital on Saturday morning after special prayers were held in mosques and eidgah across the city. A huge congregation offered namaz at the historical Jama Masiid around 6.30 am. The special Eid prayers at the Fatehpur Masid, Eidgah and Sunehri Masjid drew large crowds.
People greeted each other after the prayers and took part in the festivities. The main markets of the city, especially those around Jama Masjid and Chandni Chowk, saw brisk shopping for the festival. PM Narendra Modi and several political leaders extended their greetings and best wishes to the people.

Devotees gathered near mosques to offer namaz on the occasion of Eid-Ul-Fitr. The day marks the end of the month-long fasting or Ramadan. As per the Islamic religious beliefs, it is during the month of Ramadan that the Holy Quran was first revealed to Prophet Muhammad. It is believed that the festival was first started by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in 624 CE to celebrate the victory in the battle of Badr.

To celebrate the auspicious day of Eid-ul-Fitr, children wear new clothes, women dress in white and men gather for prayers. They also exchange gifts. Various designers also launch their Eid collection of outfits. To cope up with the scorching heat of the summer, people often tend to buy light-colored clothes and soft and lightly embroidered Eid clothes are mostly the preferred choice for women.

Along with getting decked up with embroidered clothes, women also wear jewelry and apply henna or mehendi. Muslim women decorate their hands and feet with mehndi (henna) as part of the celebrations. While many women prefer complex designs, others like simple designs with Arabic motifs.

People make delicious food items on this day and some of the most famous delicacies include sevaiyaan, kebabs, biryani, and sheer korma. Also keeping in mind, the heatwaves that often affect the health of individuals, the meal also includes a few slices of orange or some cold beverages like lemonade.
