World Breastfeeding Week 2022: Theme, history, and importance

World Breastfeeding Week 2022: World Breastfeeding Week or WBW is observed from August 1 to 7 every year. It was first started in 1992 to promote the benefits of breastfeeding on both mother and the baby.

World Breastfeeding Week's annual themes include healthcare systems, women and work, community support, ecology, economy, science, education, and human rights.  

Since 2016, World Breastfeeding Week is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In 2018, a World Health Assembly resolution endorsed WBW as an important breastfeeding promotion strategy.  

World Breastfeeding Week 2022: Importance  

Breastfeeding plays an important role in managing the burden of malnutrition. Breastfeeding provides food security and reduces inequality in society. 

Breastmilk is known to be the best food for newborn babies because it has antibodies that help to prevent many pediatric ailments.  It helps to fight germs and bacteria.  

 World Breastfeeding Week 2022 Theme  

World Breastfeeding Week theme for 2022 is "Step Up for Breastfeeding: Educate and Support".  

The theme is aimed at encouraging breastfeeding as it is a very important thing and plays a very important role in the early development of a baby.  

During World Breastfeeding Week, events are organized to spread awareness regarding the benefits of breastfeeding and educate people about the advantages of breastfeeding.

Why is breastfeeding important 

According to UNICEF, a baby should be breastfed within an hour of birth and this should continue for the first six months of the child’s life. However, there are certain things that a breastfeeding mother should keep in mind before and after the delivery of the child.
