Sawan 2024: Know history, significance, Shravan calendar and other details; wishes to share with family and friends

Sawan is a month devoted to Lord Shiva. Hindus consider it an auspicious month of the year. This year, Sawan month begins on Monday, July 22.

Sawan 2024: Start and end date

The first day of Sawan is July 22 and will end on August 19. This means Sawan will be observed for 29 days. 

There will be five Mondays:

First Sawan Somwar: July 22, 2024
Second Sawan Somwar: July 29, 2024
Third Sawan Somwar: August 05, 2024
Fourth Sawan Somwar: August 12, 2024
Fifth Sawan Somwar: August 19, 2024

Sawan Somwar: History

According to Indian mythology, the origins of Sawan may be traced back to the Samudra Manthan, when devas and asuras gathered to seek Amrit or the elixir of immortality. The churning of the water resulted in the development of a variety of things, including jewels, animals, Goddess Lakshmi, and Dhanvantri. However, when Halahal, a lethal toxin, appeared, it caused havoc.

Anyone who came in contact with it began to be annihilated. As a result, Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu sought aid from Lord Shiva. They begged Lord Shiva, who could withstand this terrible poison, to ingest it. After consuming the poison, his body became blue. Goddess Parvati, concerned about the poison spreading throughout the Lord's body, entered his neck and prevented it from spreading further. Thus, Lord Shiva became known as Neelkanth.

These events occurred during the month of Sawan. As a result, Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati are worshipped every Monday throughout the month. Sawan month is considered fortunate by Hindus since it coincides with several key festivals. According to Drik Panchang, holidays and fasts to follow include Kamika Ekadashi, Mangala Gauri Vrats, Hariyali Teej, Nag Panchami, Raksha Bandhan, Narali Purnima, and Kalki Jayanti. Some Shiva devotees embark on a Kanwar yatra, visiting sacred spots to give Gangajal to Lord Shiva.

Sawan Somwar: Significance

During this holy month, devotees worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati with great passion and commitment. This month provides an excellent chance for believers to please Lord Shiva through honest activities and seek the Lord's blessings. Monday is a special day devoted to Bholenath, but when it happens in the month of Shravana, it takes on new meaning and significance.
