WhatsApp introduces passkey support for iPhone users: A step-by-step guide

WhatsApp feature update: WhatsApp is enhancing security measures for its iOS users with the introduction of a new feature. In an announcement made on Wednesday, the popular messaging platform unveiled the rollout of passkey support for iPhone users in its latest app version. This development comes after several months of development, initially appearing as a passkey-related menu for beta testers back in January 2024. Now, after meticulous testing, the feature is being globally deployed to iOS users. It's worth noting that the passwordless login feature is already operational on WhatsApp's Android counterpart.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), WhatsApp underscored that users can now access their accounts using Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode. Although specific iOS versions were not mentioned by the company, a previous report indicated compatibility with iOS 17 and newer versions. This implies that users owning iPhone XR models or later iterations can avail themselves of this enhanced security feature.
A passkey serves as an alternative authentication method, offering heightened security compared to conventional methods like SMS codes. Developed by the FIDO Alliance and supported by industry giants like Apple, Google, and Microsoft, this technology employs public key cryptography. Two sets of keys are generated, with one stored on the platform's cloud and the other retained by the user. For iOS users, the user key is likely stored within Apple's Keychain system, accessible via Face ID or Touch ID. Authentication occurs only when both keys match, significantly bolstering defenses against phishing and similar cyber threats.
