Vaishakh Amavasya April 2023: Amavasya, also known as new moon day or no moon day, is considered a very auspicious day for offering prayers to our ancestors. This year, Vaishakh Amavasya is starting today and will end tomorrow (Thursday), April 20. The solar eclipse of 2023 will also take place tomorrow but will not be visible in India. Since there won't be a sutak, all auspicious activities related to Vaishakh Amavasya can be completed during the day.

Vaishakh Amavasya April 2023: Significance 

Lord Vishnu said that our forefathers visit earth on this day of Amavasya, according to Garud Purana, a Hindu scripture. Therefore, descendants should pray and give them food to appease them. People observe a fast and do puja on this day to honour their ancestors. This is also believed that by keeping fast, one can atone for their previous sins. On Amavasya,  Shraddh rituals are performed on Amavasya to appease and pay homage to ancestors. On this day, Kaal Sarp Dosh puja is also performed.

  • Start your day in Brahma Muhurat by taking bath.
  • Start fasting.
  • Offer prayer to Lord Sun.
  • Offer sesame seeds to holy river water as well as to Peepal tree.
  • Offer donations of food, and cloth to Brahmans and the poor.
  • Spread some seeds or bajra for birds.
