Teachers' Day 2022: Teachers' Day in India is observed on September 5 every year. The day marks the birth anniversary of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan who served as the second President of India from 1962 to 1967. Before this, he had served as the first Vice President of India from 1952 to 1962. Born on September 5, 1888, Dr Radhakrishnan was regarded as one of the finest teachers of the country.

Well-known for his notable work as a teacher, philosopher and scholar, his birth anniversary is celebrated in India every year as ‘Teachers’ Day’ since it was first proclaimed in 1962.

Radhakrishnan graduated from the Madras Christian College (MCC) with an MA in philosophy in 1906.

After Independence in 1947, he represented India at UNESCO and was also a member of the Constituent Assembly. He also served as the Ambassador to the Soviet Union.

He won several national and international awards including the Bharat Ratna in 1954. In 1963, he received an honorary membership of the British Royal Order of Merit.

In 1989, Oxford University instituted the Radhakrishnan Scholarships in honour of his memory.
