Nirjala Ekadashi May 2023: Hindus celebrate Nirjala Ekadashi, a holy day, on the eleventh lunar day of the waning fortnight of the Jyeshtha month. People observing fast on this day without water gave it the name - Ekadashi. Of the 24 Ekadashi, it is regarded as the most austere and sacred Ekadashi.

Nirjala Ekadashi May 2023: Nirjala Ekadashi is also known as Pandava Bhima Ekadashi, or Pandava Nirjala Ekadashi. The name is derived from the second and sturdiest of the five Pandava brothers—heroes of the Hindu epic Mahabharata—Bhima. The history of the Nirjala Ekadashi vrata vow is told in the Brahma Vaivarta Purana. Bhima, a food enthusiast, tried to follow all of the Ekadashi fasts but was unable to do so due to hunger. He approached the sage Vyasa, author of the Mahabharata and grandfather of the Pandavas for a solution. The sage advised him to observe Nirjala Ekadashi. Bhima attained the virtue of all 24 Ekadashis, by observing Nirjala Ekadashi.
