Why a new Parliament House?

India already had a state-of-the-art building in the form of the current Parliament, which dates back to 1927.

So what was the requiremnt of a new building?

The government said that the Parliament is almost 100 years old, and there was a lack of convenient seating arrangement for the Members of Parliament in both its houses.

In view of this situation, both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha had requested the government on August 5, 2019, to construct a new Parliament building.

On December 10, 2020, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of the new Parliament building.

Special things about new Parliament

The old Parliament building is round in shape, while the new Parliament building has been designed in a triangular shape.

At present, there is a sitting capacity of 590 people in the Lok Sabha and 280 in the Rajya Sabha.

In the new Parliament House, there are 888 seats in the Lok Sabha only, and during the joint session of both Houses, more than 1,272 MPs can sit together in the Lok Sabha itself.

The new building also has seating arrangements for more than 336 people in the Visitors' Gallery.

Separate offices have been built for important work at the Parliament House, which is equipped with hi-tech facilities.

Hi-tech equipment has also been installed in the cafe, dining area, and committee meeting rooms. Arrangements have also been made for common rooms, the ladies lounge, and the VIP lounge.

Unique things about Constitution Hall

The biggest feature of the new Parliament is its Constitution Hall, situated in the middle of the building.

There is an Ashoka pillar on top of it.

It is said that a copy of the constitution will be kept in this hall.

Along with this, big pictures of Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Subhash Chandra Bose, and the Prime Ministers of the country have also been put up.

The new Parliament is a part of the Central Vista Project of the Central Government.

Its construction started on January 15, 2021.

The tender to build it was given to Tata Project in September 2020.

Bimal Patel, the architect of the new Parliament House, has been awarded the Padma Shri in 2019.
