Makar Sankranti or Sankranthi is known as Pongal in Tamil Nadu. In Gujarat and Rajasthan, the festival is observed as Uttarayana. Makar Sankranti is known as Maghi in Haryana and Punjab.

Makar Sankranti 2023 Significance

As per Drik Panchang, Makar Sankranti is a significant day as the Sun enters Capricorn zodiac as per Vedic astrology. In Hinduism, the Sun is worshipped who nourishes all living beings on the Earth. All twelve days in Hindu calendar when Surya Deva transits a zodiac are considered significant for worshipping Surya Deva but the day when Surya Deva starts moving into Capricorn zodiac is considered the most auspicious day of the year to worship Lord Surya.

Makar Sankranti 2023: Rituals 

Various rituals are followed during Sankranti. These rituals may vary from state to state.

As per Drik Panchang these include: 

  • Ritualistic bonfire a day prior to Makar Sankranti
  • Worshipping rising Sun and deity
  • Taking religious bath in holy water bodies
  • Performing charity activities and distributing prasad
  • Worshipping live stocks
  • Preparing sweets make of sesame and jaggery
  • Rituals Of The Kite Festival-  Flying kites especially witnessed in Gujarat

What Puja is done on Makar Sankranti?

As per Drik Panchang, the Sun God is worshipped during Sankranti. Apart from deities, live stocks and cattle e.g., bulls, cows and oxen are worshipped during Sankranti.

Makar Sankranti 2023 Punya Kaal

As per Drik Panchang, time between Makar Sankranti and 40 Ghatis from the time of Makar Sankranti is considered nice for auspicious work. This duration of forty Ghatis is known as Punya Kaal.

Sankranti activies involving taking bath, offering food to deity (Lord Surya), offering charity , performing Shraddha rituals and breaking fast, should be done during Punya Kaal.
