Maharashtra Day 2024: Maharashtra Day, also known as Maharashtra Diwas, is celebrated on May 1 every year. It holds great importance for the Marathi people. It is celebrated to commemorate the formation of the state of Maharashtra in 1960.

May 1 is also celebrated as the International Labour Day all over the world. The day is also celebrated as Gujarat Day in India. 

After the Indian Constitution went into force, the country was split into states based on linguistic borders. Bombay was designated as a state composed of people who spoke Marathi, Gujarati, Konkani, and Kutchi. This was acknowledged under the State Recognition Act of 1956. However, this quickly caused disturbance and hardship. Linguistic discrepancies among Bombay residents disturbed the state's sanctity and caused complications. Movements arose demanding that the state be divided into two halves, one for people speaking Gujarati and Kutchi and the other for those speaking Marathi and Konkani. The Samyukta Maharashtra Movement and the Mahagujarat Movement initiated the movements.

Maharashtra Day is an opportunity to reflect on the state's success in numerous sectors throughout the years, including agriculture, industry, and education. It also provides an opportunity to honour the state's rich cultural legacy and identity. The day's festivities bring together individuals from all walks of life to commemorate the state's accomplishments.
