'Mauna Amavasya' is a unique Hindu tradition observed on the Amavasya (no moon day) during the Hindu month of Magha. On this day devotees observe a Maun Vrat that is silent fasting. 

According to beliefs, observing a day without talking helps one to reconnect with themself. This day is useful for assessing one's self control and patience.

On this day devotees often vow to bathe in the holy waters of the Ganga throughout the month of Magha to attain salvation and forgiveness of their sins. Bathing in the holy water begins on Pausha Purnima and ends on Magha Purnima. On Mauni Amavasya, the water of the Ganges helps anyone who drinks and takes a bath in it attain enlightenment.

Magh Amavasya– Significance 

As per mythology, people celebrate this day as the birthday of sage Manu and practice Maun Vrat to attain the quality of perfect speech. Moreover, this day is very auspicious for doing penance and praying for forgiveness from God. However, trying to avoid doing any particular work on this day directly protects people from the negative energies around them.

What is Shani Amavysa?

When Amavasya falls on a Saturday, it is called Shani Amavasya. Shani Amavasya has special significance in the scriptures. Shani Dev is specially worshiped on Shani Amavasya. 

Shani Amavsya– Significance 

According to astrology, Shani Amavasya gives relief from the negative effects of shani sadesati and dhaiyya. It is considered to be an important day as one can get relief from all the sufferings and obstacles of his life by worshiping and pleasing the Lord Shani. As per the ancient scriptures, it is very easy to please Lord Shani on the day of Shani Amavasya as this day is most dear to him.

Magha Amavasya will be observed from 6:17 pm January 21, 2023 to 2:22 pm January 22. In between this as the Amavasya is falling on a Saturday, January 21, Shani Amavasya will be celebrated.
