Lunar Eclipse 2023: Skygazers are in for a treat as the first lunar eclipse or Chandra Grahan of the year will occur today, May 5. A lunar eclipse is an astronomical event that occurs when the Moon moves into the Earth's shadow, causing the moon to be darkened. It will be a penumbral lunar eclipse which occurs when the Moon passes through the penumbra, or lighter part, of Earth's shadow, and sunlight falling on the Moon appears to be partially cut off.  

Asia, Africa, Australia, Europe, the Indian Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, and Antarctica would all be able to see the Lunar Eclipse. The eclipse will not be visible from most of North and South America. The penumbral lunar eclipse will be visible in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Mauritius, and Singapore.  As per beliefs in certain communities, no religious activities are observed during the lunar eclipse.

In India, the penumbral lunar eclipse will be visible in New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, and Pune.

Globally, the lunar eclipse will be visible in Paris, Rome, Madrid, Cairo, Berlin, Moscow, Tokyo, Sydney, Beijing, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh, Karachi, Jeddah, and Johannesburg.

Lunar Eclipse 2023: When and where to watch

People can watch Chandra Grahan today May 5, 2023, between 8:45 P.M. to 10:53 P.M. According to Drik Panchang, first contact with the penumbra will be at 8:45 PM and a maximum lunar eclipse will be till 10:53 PM. The last contact with the penumbra will be at 1:00 AM on May 6. Lunar eclipse will last over 4 Hours. 

Lunar Eclipse 2023: Sutak Kaal 

There won’t be any sutak kaal – certain inauspicious time before Surya Grahan and Chandra Grahan – for this lunar eclipse.
