Earlier, Children’s Day was celebrated in India on November 20, the day World Children’s Day is celebrated by the United Nations. But it was decided to observe Children’s Day on November 14 after the death of Nehru. A resolution was passed in the Parliament to mark his birthday as Children’s Day or Bal Diwas.

Who Was Jawaharlal Nehru?
Jawaharlal Nehru was the son of Motilal Nehru, a well-known lawyer and figurehead in the Indian independence movement. Nehru moved to England when he was 15 and spent two years at Harrow and then enrolled in Cambridge University to complete his tripos in Natural Sciences. After his return to India in 1912, he immediately entered politics.
He had always been interested in the struggle of all nations under foreign rule, even as a student. Nehru proposed the historic 'Quit India' movement during the AICC meeting in Bombay, now Mumbai, in 1942.
He served as the Prime Minister of India since Independence until his death May 27, 1964.

Children's Day is observed on November 14 in observance of Jawaharlal Nehru's birth anniversary. After Jawaharlal Nehru demise, a resolution was unanimously adopted in the parliament to honour him by designating his birthday as the official date of Children's Day. He was well renowned for emphasising the value of children in forming the country.
"Children are like buds in a garden and should be carefully and lovingly nurtured, as they are the future of the nation and the citizens of tomorrow,” he once famously said.
