Janmashtami 2024 is set to be celebrated today, August 26. Krishna Janmashtami is an annual Hindu festival which is celebrated with great enthusiasm. This festival commemorates the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. According to the Hindu lunar calendar, Janmashtami occurs on the eighth day of the dark fortnight in the month of Bhadrapada. 

On this auspicious day, people keep fast, clean their houses, cook satvik food, and make homemade prasad to offer to Shree Krishna.

Uttar Pradesh

Devotees from all over India come to visit temples in Mathura. It is Krishna's birthplace. There are many temples of Radha-Krishna in Vrindavan. Janmashtami is celebrated on a very large scale in Mathura and Vrindavan. Temples like Banke Bihari, Iskcon, and Radharaman hold grand celebrations.

Dwarka

Krishna dwelt in Dwarka for thousands of years. On Janmashtami, the city's streets are decked with lights and flowers till midnight to welcome Lord Krishna. There is no indication of darkness since the entire city is waiting for its creator to be born at midnight. Local markets are open till midnight.

Goa

People in Goa enjoy and celebrate Janmashtami on a great. It is the only place where Lord Krishna and Devaki are worshipped together.

Andhra Pradesh

There are several Iskon temples in Andhra Pradesh where Janmashtami is celebrated with tremendous enthusiasm. These temples are replicas of Vrindavan temples, so there is something for everyone to worship and enjoy here.

Maharashtra

On this day, people break dahi handi filled with curd, butter and rice batter. They do it in a very entertaining way as they make a pyramid to break the pot. Thane is the best place to watch this dahi handi celebration in Maharashtra.

Tamil Nadu

On this day, devotees sing songs for Lord Krishna on this day. Many people dress up small children like Krishna and they also draw tiny footprints of Krishna in front of their houses. 

Kerala

Here, Krishna is worshipped as Guruvayoorappan. Devotees sing songs and dance on this auspicious day. 

Jaipur

There is a Govind temple in the city place in Jaipur. Everywhere in Jaipur, people celebrate this day with great enthusiasm.
