As per UNESCO, the first National Woman's Day was observed in the United States on February 28, 1909, which the Socialist Party of America dedicated in honour of the 1908 garment workers' strike in New York where women protested against harsh working conditions.
"In 1917, women in Russia chose to protest and strike under the slogan "Bread and Peace" on the last Sunday in February (which fell on March 8 on the Gregorian calendar). Their movement ultimately led to the enactment of women's suffrage in Russia," UNESCO's official website reads.

It 1945 Charter of the United Nations became the first international agreement to affirm the principle of equality between women and men but it was only on March 8 during International Women's Year in 1975 that the UN celebrated its first official International Women's Day.
Later in 1977, the General Assembly adopted a resolution that proclaimed a United Nations Day for Women's Rights and International Peace to be observed on any day of the year by Member States under their historical and national traditions.

International Women’s Day 2023: Google Doodle
Seach engine giant Google is also celebrating International Women's Day with a Doodle on its homepage. The vignettes within each “GOOGLE” letter highlight a few areas in which women around the world support each other to progress and improve each other's quality of life.
Calling women a critical support system for each other in motherhood, the Doodle page of the day read, "Women in positions of influence who advocate for progress across issues central to the lives of women everywhere. Women who come together to explore, learn, and rally for their rights. Women who are primary caregivers to people of all walks of life." It is illustrated by Doodle Artist, Alyssa Winans.

International Women’s Day 2023 Theme
As per United Nations' official website, the theme for International Women's Day 2023 is ‘DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality. It emphasises the importance of technology in bringing gender issues to light.
”This year, on International Women’s Day, I would like to applaud this new generation of young women – for their courage in speaking out, inspiring others and mobilizing their peers, for a more sustainable tomorrow,” the director General of UNESCO Audrey Azoulay's message for this year’s International Women’s Day read.
"Breaking the glass ceiling is a big challenge even in the modern professional world and many women, despite their caliber, ambition and mettle, face numerous challenges in their path towards leadership status. It is important to continue believing in vision, capabilities and goals to succeed," Sandhya Sakhuja, Director, Vedic Cosmeceuticals, said.
Parijat Ghosh, team coordinator, PRADAN, said that gender audits have encouraged women to take stand for themselves and speak up for what is right. "Women should have faith in themselves to take up larger roles," she said.
