On Monday, November 25, heavy rain and thunderstorms are likely in several parts of coastal Tamil Nadu owing to the probable effect of a cyclonic system as the Bay of Bengal develops a new weather disturbance. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reports that an upper-air cyclonic circulation has formed over the Equatorial Indian Ocean near the Sumatra coast and the neighbouring South Andaman Sea.

The weather department has predicted heavy rain in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and its Karaikkal regions on November 25, followed by very heavy rainfall on November 26.

Chennai weather forecast for next week

November 23: Partly overcast, with light rain in some areas. Temperatures will range from 25 degrees Celsius to 31 degrees Celsius.
November 24: Moderate rain in certain regions, partly overcast sky, with temperatures ranging from 25 degrees Celsius to 31 degrees Celsius.
November 25: Thunderstorms and lightning are expected, with temperatures ranging from 25 to 31 degrees Celsius.
November 26: Moderate to heavy rain is expected with usually overcast sky and temperatures ranging from 24 to 29 degrees Celsius.
November 27: Expect an overcast sky and moderate rain, with temperatures ranging from 24 to 29 degrees Celsius.

Yellow and orange alerts in Tamil Nadu

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) issued an orange alert for Tamil Nadu on November 26 as an upper-level cyclonic circulation is expected to form over the South Andaman Sea and its surrounding areas within the next 24 hours.

Update on rainfall: October 1 to November 15

It may be noted that from October 1 to November 15, Tamil Nadu received 276 mm of rainfall during the Northeast Monsoon.

Coimbatore recorded the highest rainfall at 418 mm, which is 67 per cent above normal.

While 17 districts, including Chennai, reported excess rainfall, others recorded deficits.

With the state receiving consistent rainfall since the onset of the monsoon on October 17, nearly 90 reservoirs across the state are over 60 per cent full.

Tamil Nadu's reservoirs currently hold 143.804 tmcft (thousand million cubic feet) of water, which is 64.11 per cent of their total capacity of 224.297 tmcft.

Heavy rains predicted in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Himachal Pradesh

Meanwhile, the IMD has predicted heavy rainfall in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Himachal Pradesh from November 23 to November 25.
