Every year, the auspicious occasion is marked on the full moon day of the Kartik month, also known as Kartik Purnima.
History
Guru Nanak Dev was a man of peace who spent his entire life promoting equality and tolerance. He was born in 1469 in the village of Rai Bhoi di Talwandi, now called Nankana Sahib, near Lahore -- now in Pakistan.
Numerous hymns written by Guru Nanak were compiled by Guru Arjan into the Adi Granth. He travelled around India, visiting holy places.

Around the world, devotees pray on this day, especially at the Golden Temple in Amritsar, which enthusiastically celebrates Gurpurab. During the procession, the revered Guru Grant Sahib is carried in a palanquin while devotees chant hymns in unison and play traditional instruments.
Moreover, Gurdwaras recite verses from the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikhs' sacred text, nonstop for 48 hours starting with the "Akhand Path" chant. The opening line of the revered Sri Guru Granth Sahib, which incorporates the composition and bani of all ten Sikh Gurus, is claimed to be the first word in Sikhism and is titled "Ik Onkar."
Following the festivities of Guru Nanak Jayanti, volunteers host langars at Gurudwaras. Many individuals participate in sewa and serve food to visitors.
