Gudi Padwa 2023: Marathi New Year also known as ‘Gudi Padwa’ or ‘Samvatsar Padvo’ will be celebrated on March 22 this year. Gudi Padwa is the first day of the year, according to the Maharashtrian calendar.

Gudi Padwa is mostly celebrated by Marashtrians and Konkanis in Maharashtra and Goa. According to Luni-Solar–the position of the Moon and the position of the Sun divide the year into months and days calendar it is Marathi New Year.

According to Drik Panchang, Gudi Padwa will be celebrated on March 22, 2023. Pratipada Tithi will begin at 10:52 PM on Mar 21, and will end at 8:20 PM on Mar 22, 2023.

Gudi Padwa 2023: Significance

The festival marks the creation of the Universe by the Hindu god Brahma. Devotees believe the day brings good luck, happiness, success, and wealth. While Gudi denotes Lord Brahma's flag, Padwa stands for the first day of a new Moon phase.

According to Hindu beliefs, Lord Rama has also crowned after defeating Ravana on this day. 

Gudi Padwa 2023: Rituals 

The day starts with a ritualistic bath, which is followed by prayers. People clean their homes and decorate them with flower garlands, earthen lamps, and rangolis. They also put on new clothes before praying.

Gudi flags are made with a colourful silk scarf tied to a bamboo stick with neem leaves and mango flowers on top, as well as Saakhar gaathi (sugar candy garland). Victory is represented by an inverted kalash on a bamboo stick. The Gudi is hoisted outside the house after the pooja.

Sweet and savoury treats are also distributed.
