Goa Liberation Day: The Goa Liberation movement was led Dr Ram Manohar Lohia on June 18, 1946, with the aim of liberating Goa by gathering young Goans.
Goa Liberation Day is celebrated on December 19 every year to commemorate the state's freedom from Portuguese rule in 1961. The Indian armed forces under Operation Vijay with the help of local resistance movements eradicated Portuguese rule from the state.
The Goa Liberation movement was led Dr Ram Manohar Lohia on June 18, 1946, with the aim of liberating Goa by gathering young Goans. This day every year is marked as Goa Revolution Day every year.
President Droupadi Murmu on Monday greeted citizens, especially the people of Goa on the state's Liberation Day and said the nation salutes its armed forces for their valour.
"On Goa Liberation Day, I convey my greetings to all fellow citizens, especially the people of Goa. We pay homage to the freedom fighters who fought for the liberation of Goa from colonial rule. We salute our armed forces for their valour. My best wishes to the people of the state," Murmu tweeted.

Similarly, Prime minister Narendra Modi also tweeted, "Goa Liberation Day greetings to the people of Goa. On this day, we recall the courage and monumental contribution of all those who were a part of the movement to free Goa. We are inspired by their vision and are working towards Goa's development."

Goa liberation day history:
Goa gained independence after 14 years of India's freedom from Portuguese rule. On December 19, 1961, Jawaharlal Nehru sent armed forces to the coastal state. The Portuguese surrendered and the state was liberated. As a result, Goa, Daman, and Diu became Union Territories of India.
