As India loses former PM Dr Manmohan Singh, X flooded with condolence messages

As India lost its former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh on Thursday, December 26, social media platforms were flooded with condolence messages from top government officials and politicians. Dr Singh breathed his last at the All India Institute Of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in the national capital. He was 92 years old and had been battling age-related conditions for the past few months. 

Dr Singh is survived by his wife, Gurcharan Kaur Singh, and three daughters.

Netizens expressed grief over the passing of Dr Singh, widely recognised as the chief architect of India's economic reforms in 1991.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on microblogging site X (formerly Twitter): "India mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished leaders, Dr Manmohan Singh Ji. Rising from humble origins, he rose to become a respected economist. He served in various government positions as well, including as Finance Minister, leaving a strong imprint on our economic policy over the years."

PM Modi also wrote: "His (Dr Singh's) interventions in Parliament were also insightful. As our Prime Minister, he made extensive efforts to improve people’s lives."

BJP National President Jagat Prakash Nadda

Bhartiya Janata Party National President JP Nadda described the passing of Dr Singh as "an immense loss for the nation".

"A visionary statesman and a stalwart of Indian politics, throughout his remarkable career in public service, he (Dr Singh) consistently voiced for the welfare of the downtrodden. His leadership earned admiration and respect across party lines. Shri Manmohan Singh ji’s legacy will continue to inspire generations in their pursuit of nation-building. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and admirers. Om Shanti," wrote Nadda. 

Home Minister Amit Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed grief over the passing of former PM Dr Manmohan Singh.

From serving as the RBI Governor to Finance Minister and then Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh played an important role in the governance of the country, Shah tweeted. 

He also expressed his condolences to Dr Singh's family and supporters.

"May Waheguru ji grant peace to his soul and give strength to his family members to bear this loss," Shah added.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman wrote: "Former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh is no more. He had served as the Governor of RBI and as Finance Minister of India. Presented the milestone budget of 1991 which liberalised the Indian economy. Respected by all, he was soft-spoken and gentle. Condolences to his family and friends."

Expressing grief over the news, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said Dr Manmohan Singh "played a key role in rebuilding India’s economy during difficult times. He was widely respected for his service and intellect. His contribution to India’s progress will always be remembered. My heartfelt condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti!"

Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan

Former PM Dr Manmohan Singh was an embodiment of simplicity, humility and probity, wrote Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy described Dr Singh as "a visionary economist, statesman, and former Prime Minister who steered India through critical times with grace and wisdom".

"His contributions to India's economic reforms, global stature, and democratic values will forever be remembered. Dr. Singh was a beacon of integrity, humility, and intellect in public life, inspiring generations of leaders and citizens alike. His loss leaves a void that cannot be filled. My heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. May his soul rest in eternal peace," wrote Kumaraswamy.

"A leader of unparalleled humility and quiet strength, he always placed the country's welfare above all else. During my tenure as BJP President, I had the privilege of engaging with him on several occasions, each interaction leaving a lasting impression. Today, India mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished sons. I extend my deepest condolences to Dr. Singh Ji's family and countless admirers. Om Shanti," Gadkari wrote.

Union Minister of Commerce & Industry Piyush Goyal wrote: "Deeply saddened by the demise of former Prime Minister and distinguished economist, Dr Manmohan Singh ji. His contributions to India's economic reforms charted a new path of development for the nation."

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wrote: "Profoundly stunned and saddened by the sudden demise of our former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh ji. I had worked with him and saw him from very close quarters in the Union Cabinet. His erudition and wisdom were unquestionable, and the depth of the financial reforms ushered in by him in the country are widely acknowledged. The country will miss his stewardship and I shall miss his affection. My sincere condolences to his family, friends and followers."

Describing Dr Singh's demise as an irreparable loss for the country, former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said it is impossible to put into words the qualities of his scholarship and simplicity.
