The day is celebrated to mark the victory of Lord Shiva over the demon Tripurasur. And that is why the Utsav is also known as Tripurotsav or Tripurari Purnima. This year, Dev Deepawali Utsav is being celebrated on November 7.

On Dev Diwali, which is observed on the auspicious day of Kartik Purnima, devotees take a holy dip in the river Ganga and light earthen lamps (diyas) in the evening. When dusk sets, the steps of all the Ghats on the riverfront of the Ganga are lit with millions of earthen lamps. Not only Ganga ghats but also the temples of Varanasi are lit with millions of diyas.
