New CM Atishi's Oath Ceremony: National Capital Delhi is all set to welcome a new Chief Minister today, September 21. President Draupadi Murmu has accepted Arvind Kejriwal's resignation and appointed Atishi as the new CM of Delhi.
Atishi Marlena will take the oath in Delhi today, along with five ministers from her cabinet. Along with Gopal Rai, Saurabh Bhardwaj, Kailash Gehlot, and Imran Hussain - Mukesh Kumar Ahlawat, the MLA from Sultanpur Majra, will also join the cabinet as a new face. The AAP Legislature Party finalized Atishi's appointment following Kejriwal's resignation on September 17.
What time will Atishi take oath?
Atishi will take the oath as the Chief Minister today at 4:30 PM at Raj Niwas. The five ministers will also take their oaths at the same time, with LG Vinay Kumar Saxena administering the ceremony. It is expected that Gopal Rai, Saurabh Bhardwaj, Kailash Gehlot, and Imran Hussain will retain the same departments they previously managed, while Mukesh Ahlawat may be assigned responsibilities including Social Welfare and Labor and Employment.
Atishi: Delhi's third woman Chief Minister
Upon taking her oath today, Atishi will become the third woman to serve as Chief Minister of Delhi, following Sushma Swaraj and Sheila Dixit. Sushma Swaraj had a brief tenure, while Sheila Dixit served for an impressive 15 years. At 43, Atishi is also set to become the youngest Chief Minister in Delhi's history, surpassing Kejriwal, who was 45 when he first took office. After her oath, Atishi will need to prove her majority; the Delhi government has called for a two-day assembly session on September 26 and 27 for this purpose.
Atishi's Political Career
Atishi began her political career during the anti-corruption movement and served as an advisor to Delhi's Deputy CM and Education Minister, Manish Sisodia, from 2015 to 2018. She has also been a member of the Political Affairs Committee (PAC) of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). In 2019, Atishi contested the Lok Sabha elections but was defeated by Gautam Gambhir.
Born on June 8, 1981, Atishi comes from an academic family; both her parents were professors at Delhi University. She attended Springdale School in Delhi and earned her master's degree from St. Stephen's College. Subsequently, she received a Chevening Scholarship to study at Oxford University, where she obtained her second master's degree. Atishi is one of the founding members of the Aam Aadmi Party, having contributed to the party's first manifesto draft in 2013.
